EMIL EGGER AG, St. Gallen – MS SQL Server performance analysis
During the introduction of a new transport management system, load tests with 20 to 30 concurrent users showed significant delays. With the go-live approaching, the question was whether the cause lay with the SQL Server, the storage, the network or the application's data processing.
amanit analysed the database environment using established SQL Server diagnostic tools and Windows Performance Monitor; AGIBA IT Services AG examined the storage and infrastructure side in parallel. The measurements showed that SQL Server, CPU, storage and indexing had sufficient performance reserves and were not the essential bottleneck. What stood out instead was a high share of wait times in the data transfer and processing between application and database, along with a very high number of individual database queries.
Based on the analysis, the TMS vendor confirmed that sufficient performance reserves are available on the SQL Server side. At the same time, given the system's architecture, concrete optimisation opportunities were identified – for example reducing individual data retrievals and loading data in batches.
The final report thus gave EMIL EGGER AG a fact-based foundation for further optimisation together with the software vendor and helped narrow down the possible causes in a targeted way.
